Quake in your boots with awe when you stand in the presence of your idol? We all do. That’s humility we can all understand: we grok and salute it. We also applaud the humility felt by ourselves and others toward grandparents or the elders of our own life tribes.
Those forms of humility are natural. They are not brave. To lead you must have bravery in the face of corporate cultural norms. Bravery big enough to assert power over arrogance. Bravery that takes the form of “I need you. I recognize your power. I can learn and grow with your help and I am humble in this moment.”
Those upon whom you rely have power in your immediate moment. Their resources are something you need, and you must ask for their help. But by showing humility in your temporary dependence you can grow into your own power. Be ready, then, when someone appears before you, humble, asking for your guidance.
