We’ve been saying “Meaning Scales” for years.
Which is another way of saying, running a small mom & pop business can be just as meaningful as running a $500 billion corporation, depending on the individual.
Keywords: “Depending on the individual”. It’s not the vehicle that matters, but who’s driving it and where it takes them.
Far too many pick a career by how it looks on the outside. Then they find out the grim reality that awaits them on the inside.
A better idea, I think, is to follow the advice of the great mystics: stop looking outside yourself for salvation, but look within. That’s where the real answers are.
[Further reading from HBR]: “The 3 Challenges Every CEO Faces”. Maintaining energy, check. Maintaining relationships with the board, check. Keeping up with the information flow, check. But no mention of culture, funnily enough 😉
I guess it’s difficult for CEO’s to see what they are immersed in. Even with a lot of outside interactions, they are still immersed in their respective industry / Sector culture; and captured by their own operational mindsets (as I read from the HBR piece you refer to).
Perhaps Boards are best placed to notice and attend to their organization’s culture. Helping a Board to do this sounds like a business opportunity for hired help.
