On the Sermon on The Mount (Matthew 5:5), Jesus declares: “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.”
Which makes most normal people ask the question, “Huh? Meek? Really? What planet is he on?”
I mean, the last time we saw anyone inheriting the Earth, it wasn’t the meek who were doing it, right?
I’ve been told that in the original Aramaic, it isn’t so much “Blessed are the inherently weak and feeble”, but more like, “Blessed are they who can use their sword, but choose to leave it in the scabbard” (*no link, sorry). Meek is from the Greek term praus – πραυς. In fact it does not suggest weakness; rather, it denotes strength brought under control.
In other words, the best kind of strength is the kind that is never needed.
Which is almost Buddhist. Funny how it’s all connected, somehow…
