To paraphrase Mark Twain, the fact that somebody wants to hold office should immediately disqualify them from being able to run for office.
To put it another way, why would any sane person actually want the job? Every four years we are reminded of this, when the insanity circus comes to town.
What? You want to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to become President, because you REALLY want power that badly? Seriously?!!
And besides the candidates, we have ARMIES of people backing them up: the campaign workers, the politicians looking for deals, the campaign contributors and lobbyists looking for influence, the media folk looking for scoops, the ad people looking for exposure… everyone wanting a piece of the action, all with a direct interest in making sure the craziness actually stays crazy.
Yes, it’s insanity. The problem starts when we, the voters, start confusing it with normal, healthy behavior.
