“It’s a cultural instinct to wait to get picked. To seek out the permission and authority that comes from a publisher or talk show host or even a blogger saying, ‘I pick you.’ Once you reject that impulse and realize that no one is going to select you–that Prince Charming has chosen another house–then you can actually get to work.”
A long time ago, I realized that my cartoons would never be mainstream, would never be “picked” by Hollywood or New York. Luckily, the Internet came along, and it no longer mattered.
Gapingvoid was able to “pick itself”, as it were.
This approach certainly worked for me and my team, but as the image implies, it does have its downside. There’s no country club to belong to. There’s no net if you fall.
