Is what you do for a living science, or an art?
It’s probably a bit of both, right?
And what do both science and art have in common? They both are exercises in uncertainty.
An artist doesn’t know if the painting is going to be any good once it’s finished, any more than the scientist knows if the experiment is going to be successful in proving the theorem, or not.
And the minute you try to remove the uncertainty from the equation, something dies. Suddenly it’s no longer the thing you originally fell in love with, but something you’re just phoning in, something with no purpose other than keeping your boss off your back.
Whatever you do, it’s not the results that give it its magic, but the uncertainty.
So embrace it. Embrace others who feel the same: companions, colleagues and customers alike.
Good luck to you.
