Americans are obsessed with romantic love.
The “coupled up” ideal infiltrates our lives from marketing (duh) to Supreme Court decisions. In his decision on same-sex marriage, Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote in favor of the petitioners, “not … be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization’s oldest institutions.”
We love the idea of love, and the more we’re exposed to it, the more important it seems. But love is about so much more than passion or lust.
Love is built from passion, of course, but also trust. Respect. Appreciation. Gratitude.
Feelings that have to be mutual in order to be real.
Love is support and friendship. It’s a special feeling.
Respect in the workplace is necessary!
