The Internet broke a few days ago when it was suddenly announced that Hipster Barbie was quitting.
What? No more “pure, authentic living” Instagram posts from the Pacific Northwest? How on earth will the cool kids in Brooklyn ever survive?
The great 18th Century Scots poet, Robert Burns once wrote, “O wad some Pow’r the giftie gie us, to see oursels as ithers see us!” (Oh would some power have the gift to give us, to see ourselves as others see us”).
In other words, to think one can control how others see you is actually pretty impossible. The closest you can get to that, is to get them to see a parody of you. An avatar. A gimmick version of you.
And how much fun would that be to maintain? A week would be exhausting enough, never mind a lifetime.
My advice: Trying to look perfect only makes you miserable, long-term. You’re much better off simply being yourself.
