When Europeans move to the the United States, one of the most unsettling bits of culture shock they experience is all the positive attitude everywhere.
“AWESOME!!! HAVE A NICE DAAAAAAY!!!!!”
Let’s just say, it comes as a bit of a shock to the system if one isn’t used to it.
I mean, why can they not be glum, ticked-off and cynical, like everybody else, the way the Good Lord intended?
But then after they’ve been here a while, they begin to realize that all this positive attitude a big reason why the Americans are so successful and productive.
A positive attitude keeps you going during the tough times, it keeps you going when everybody else has quit. A positive attitude makes it easier to trust people, makes it easier to find collaborators, makes it easier to say “Let’s give this a go and see what happens.”
A positive attitude makes a lot of little things add up to be a lot of big things.
The sad part about “Have a Nice Day” when we visit, say, Florida is when you look into the faces of those saying it (supermarkets, shops, restaurants)…
… and they really couldn’t give a hoot what kind of day you’ve had, or about to have!
it’s the last thing on their mind.
what their face and voice and averted eyes say is “Let me get through this routine. Let’s move this person on; so that I can get through to my next customer… so that i can get home to do what i really enjoy, rather than being in this place!”
They’re just saying it, because they’re expected to say it.
And they have no idea what else to say.
Our family have commented on this regularly, whilst visiting the USA for the last 30 years.
And frankly, we find it beyond corny.
It’s laughable.
It’s nothing to do with PMA.
Just plain nonsensical, because it’s so robotic!
It’s like the greeting which says “How are you?”…
When the last thing the person wants to know is how you really are.
We are based in FL …..it’s so true!
