This is a favorite quote by the great business writer, Margaret Heffernan.
Margaret’s work is permeated with a very simple idea: companies that let their people play nice together generally tend to outperform companies that only reward the rock stars while looking down on everyone else. Silicon Valley is living proof of this, with its history rooted in the sciences- the latter has always had a high degree of collaboration, more than most businesses.
For a brief intro into her thinking, check out her TED Talk or read one of my personal favorites, “A Bigger Prize”.
What’s interesting about all this, we think, is how all this so-called touchy-feely stuff is suddenly being shown to outperform the hard-nosed, survival-of-the-fittest stuff.
We live, after all, in a world that spends a lot of time trying to get us us to believe otherwise.
Which is why Margaret’s well thought out ideas are so utterly refreshing.
