I notice a lot of people people my age (middle age) having to start again, and often it isn’t because they wanted to.
The man who lost his job at the Big Multinational and can’t find another one like it. Or a mother of three who recently divorced, and now has to go back to work for the first time in 15 years, starting again at the bottom.
Of course it’s not just people who were given a sudden upset, who are finding themselves needing renewal. The kind of work that was fun and interesting when you were 35 might not be quite so much fun when you are 50, and so your M.O. needs to change, as well.
In all these cases, something need to be let go of. In particular, the things that brought you status in the past are the hardest to let go of, even if they no longer serve your needs.
And that’s where we get stuck. We get attached to the way things used to be, even if that world no longer exists.
Clinging to this is where most of the pain is generated. Letting go of this is where most of the joy will be generated. The only question is, do you have the humility and tenacity to find this out?
You tell me.
