“Accountability” is one of those ideas that everyone in the business world supposedly lives and dies by, yet it often falls short in reality.
Not unlike dieting, I suppose. The heart is strong but the flesh is weak etc.
There is abundant management science around the idea of what gets measured gets done, but what actually drives people to get things done?
Money? Price? Shame? Love of customer or patient? Or, is it something deeper?
Could there be a world where measurement has no impact on the outcome? Where people do the right thing and focus on the essential outcomes because they are hard-wired to do it?
Where it is just how things are done around here?
We’ve seen it and all organizations who achieve this have some things in common.
They deliberately meet key emotional needs of their employees.
We’ll be digging into this a bit more in the coming days.
