[“Untitled 091101”. Ink on business card. Drawn earlier today.]
It’s been an interesting couple of weeks at gapingvoid Central. Sometime during September, I started drawing in earnest again, back in my original, no-frills ink on “Back of Business Cards” format. We’re talking 2-3 hundred of them in the last month.
I felt the need to get back to my roots- back to something simpler, back in touch with the “Utterly Basic” sensibility I had when I was living in New York- no other reason.
Plan to be seeing more of these efforts posted online soon. Very exciting!
I’m just so happy right now. I feel new again. Seriously.

Keep it simple! Great to feel new again.Looking forward to seeing more.

What is your media these days?
Ink on paper
–or–
Wacom (or similar) tablet?
Ron, I use both, but mostly the former, India Ink on Bristol Board.
The Tablet PC has its uses (mostly saving time), but it’s a highly imperfect medium.
So great to read this. I’m having a similar moment. Been so caught up lately with trying to figure out my master plan with my art that I’ve neglected painting. Went out and painted a plein air piece yesterday and feel so much better now! I guess, sometimes we just need to feed our soul instead of our brain.
Back to your roots, feeling new and happy; sounds like change is in the air. Renewed passion in the very thing that put you where you are now, I would hazard a guess a new creative direction is likely (with or without the evil plan).
Ah, that makes me feel all nostalgic reading your ‘utterly basic sensibility’ again. I remember finding it for the first time – way back when. You are such an inspiration.
We have always admired your business card art concept. Best of luck with your renaissance, hope all goes as well as today.
Hugh,
I’m so glad I’m following you. I appreciate your talent, but I respect you being you even more.
Just wanted you to know.
Cheers to utterly basic sensibility.
