Facebook likes “Open” as a philosophy. The more “Open” the are, the more they can take advantage of new ideas and opportunities. And they’re very good at that, having left pretty much all competition in the dust.
Yet Facebook is the largest walled garden in the history of the Internet. By far.
See the paradox?
It’s nothing new, all humans are like this. We all like keeping our doors open, that doesn’t stop us from getting locks installed when it suits us.
In terms of business, the trick to staying open begins with a certain degree of emotional honesty in leaders, which then spreads throughout the entire culture of an organization.
That means, when you have to keep things closed, everybody knows why, everybody trusts it’s for the right reasons, and not because of politics.
Everybody gives you the benefit of the doubt.
