Being asked to take a chance on something new at work can feel like leading the charge out onto the battlefield. Only when you stop and turn around, no one else has followed you out there. (Yikes!)
Why IS new stuff so hard?
Because we hate feeling alone.
Because we risk failing in front of other people.
Because we’re afraid of getting laughed at if we do.
But maybe the secret to accepting risk lies in our mindset. After all, many of the world’s great successes were once dealing with a long line of failures.
To paraphrase Thomas Edison, “I haven’t failed, I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”
When we look at it like that, we realize that the only way to ever be successful is to make a few mistakes along the way. And yeah, people might laugh, but they’ll also forget and move on.
Or, we’ll end up inspiring them to take their own chances, make their own mistakes, earn their own success. Pretty neat.
