If I think there were a Holy Grail to the world of work, something that everyone should aspire to, I’d call it “Presence”. i.e. being totally into it, in the here and now and having that as a pretty normal state of affairs.
As opposed to dragging your feet to the office every morning, just doing busy work, glazing your eyes over during meetings, and hanging out around the water cooler.
Presence matters so much more than the money to most people, there’s even solid scientific evidence to prove that. Of course, having presence is also the way to best guarantee the money. So there’s that as well…
But presence doesn’t just happen. You need to give something of yourself first. It’s a giving act and giving acts are acts of love, even if the L-word embarrasses the grownups.
