This Week at Gapingvoid: March 2 - 6

Two things about doing great work:

1. Just because you’re paying good money for it, doesn’t mean you’re necessarily going to get it.
2. It doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It need to be inspired by something, as the cartoon suggests.Great work is only done by inspired teams. And inspired teams are a privilege, not a right.

Like Simon Sinek said, great works comes out of the “why” of it, not the “what” of it.

I saw this article the other day, and it got me thinking about leadership.Once you “make it” as they say – you finally climbed atop your Mount Everest – what happens to the rest of us?

You could put it all behind you, how it felt back when you were at the bottom of the food chain.

Or – you can use that feeling to help others (like you) succeed.

I often say that a good leader is one who doesn’t ignore problems.

I don’t think I need to explain this one too much, at least, not to long-term gapingvoid readers. You already get it, right?However, I will say, I didn’t draw this as “just a cartoon” per se. I designed it deliberately as a print, in order for a certain large client to hang it in their office hallway, for everyone to see. EVERYONE, from the C-Suite, to the sales people, to the receptionist.

I designed it as something to “signal” a very clear message to the troops: We’re here to be inspired, and if we’re not, we’re in trouble.

This cartoon is for all my HR buddies out there.HR is one of those departments that receives more than its fair share of snark. I guess that’s not surprising, given the nature of the job.

But I say to my beleaguered HR friends, take heart, for it has never been a better time to be in HR business.

Why? Because company leaders are finally beginning to understand the importance of company culture in creating desired outcomes. And HR is in the front line of that.
