When gapingvoid was still in its infancy, I drew the gun cartoon above.
Before gapingvoid, I had pretty much spent the first half of my career being an ad-industry grunt, and not a very good one a that. Though I received an incredible education from the experience, I was glad to leave that world behind, when the time came.
I spent the next decade after that, fighting like hell to find a better alternative. I had a lot of ups and down, but once Jason and I started working together on gapingvoid, Boom! It all started to click. Happy ending.
What has all this taught me? That Dan Pink is right, that money and status is not what really drives us, it’s “Mastery, Autonomy and Purpose” that really drives us.
Money and status are only there to enable the latter.
This “Gun” cartoon is there to remind us that personal sovereignty is not something you get because of dumb luck, it’s something you get because you spent a long time fighting like hell for it.
And this, at its core, is what gapingvoid is all about: Creating art for people who are also fighting like hell for it.
The people who get it, will understand. The people who don’t, will make excuses. Which one are you?
