the gapingvoid manifesto:

“We live in incredible times. And as long as there is still one person on the planet who doesn’t believe this, then there’s still work to be done.”

[BACKSTORY : My name is Hugh MacLeod.  I’m a cartoonist. I started a decade ago in in May, 2001 when I started publishing “Cartoons Drawn On The Back Of Business Cards. I used to be an advertising copywriter. Eventually I wrote a couple of books. I now draw “Cube Grenades” i.e. corporate commissions for a living, my biggest client now being Rackspace. I have a daily cartoon newsletter, which I send out every weekday to tens of thousands of people. I also have an online gallery, where I sell art. Thanks for reading etc.]

“We live in incredible times.” I say that a lot.

But it’s true. We really do.

And that’s the main purpose of drawing gapingvoid cartoons: To make people believe it, or die trying.

I drew this cartoon in January ’11. My first of the year.

The fellow in the cartoon is “Gloop”, a character I’ve been using since college. He pops up in my work now and again. Part Alter-Ego, part Everyman.

Most people who read my work are creative people; that’s not just an opinion, that’s just how it worked out. This cartoon is for them. For you.

“Bring new light to what life might be.” That’s what Creativity means. That’s why you were born; that’s why you are here. To bring some new angle to the human condition- if not to the broader world in general, then at least to your family and the people around you.

You don’t have to believe this- this drive may not be your drive, may not be the thing that propels you forward. That’s fine.

However, if you DO have that capacity within yourself and you DON’T act upon it, then everything around you turns to desert.

“Bring new light to what life might be” is my wish for you and Everybody else. That’s why we are here. Godspeed.

Hugh MacLeod is a genius.  Genius.

Seth Godin
Best Selling Author

His work acknowledges the absurdity of workaday life, while also encouraging employees to respond with passion, creativity, and non-conformity...   MacLeod’s work is undeniably an improvement over the office schlock of yore. At its best, it’s more honest, and more cognizant of the entrepreneurial psyche, while still retaining some idealism.

Lydia Depillis

Last year my State of the College address was 76 slides loaded with data. This year it was 14 cartoons that were substantially more memorable.

Former President, Babson College

"There are only two daily newsletters that I look forward to opening and reading every time they show up to my inbox: Seth Godin's and gapingvoid."

Tony Hsieh
CEO, Zappos

In moments of indecision I glance at the wall [to Hugh's work] for guidance.
