Happy Birthday, Nelson Mandela

[Sent out earlier today in the gapingvoid newsletter etc.]

Today being Nelson Mandela’s 95th birthday, I thought it would be a good time for us all to think about Freedom.

That sense of freedom that we all have, even if you’re not a political prisoner, even if you’re not born into poverty. Even if, like me, you have a great job in the developed world.

Freedom doesn’t run on autopilot. It has to be fought for, again and again.

And to do so is a personal choice, that’s what today’s cartoon is really about.

The struggle we all have, the struggle that will never go away.

That’s what Mr Mandela represents to me.

Happy Birthday, Nelson. Get well soon.

Hugh MacLeod is a genius.  Genius.

Seth Godin
Best Selling Author

His work acknowledges the absurdity of workaday life, while also encouraging employees to respond with passion, creativity, and non-conformity...   MacLeod’s work is undeniably an improvement over the office schlock of yore. At its best, it’s more honest, and more cognizant of the entrepreneurial psyche, while still retaining some idealism.

Last year my State of the College address was 76 slides loaded with data. This year it was 14 cartoons that were substantially more memorable.

Former President, Babson College

"There are only two daily newsletters that I look forward to opening and reading every time they show up to my inbox: Seth Godin's and gapingvoid."

Tony Hsieh
CEO, Zappos

In moments of indecision I glance at the wall [to Hugh's work] for guidance.
