[...] The key to taking risks is to keep things in balance without swinging too far toward either extreme. Don’t jump into something that involves a serious risk without at least taking some time to do a little research and think about whether you are doing the right thing. Man, if I had a dollar for every time I left a comment I regretted later, hell, it would pay for a weekend in Vegas :D

I had the same feeling when I wanted to buy my first apartment building. I knew single family real estate investing, but the knowledge gap between that and apartment-scale projects was a big unknown, and I didn't know the size of the gap.

Only by moving INTO the gap could I discover how small it really was. Shockingly small as a matter of fact.

Hi Hugh--
Well, I have to agree with some of what you said above. Thanks for saying it. I apologize for the content of the post, and would not say those things today. As you say, I did not read you correctly, and was ungracious in my reply. I must have been in some-kind-of-mood that day! This does not excuse the boorish words, however, as I know better. I'm sorry.

For those who commented below: I'm sorry to have been a distraction. I apologize.

Great article! It is sometimes best to just jump and work out the details in the process. Overthinking usually stifles creative thinking. I find that when I paint, the ones I think too hard on are not the best. When I go with the flow, the results are much better.

[...] Some words of wisdom from Hugh MacLeod about why closing your eyes and making the leap can sometimes be better than thinking too much. A little knowledge is a good thing, too much can result in paralysis. Having been victims of over-thinking ourselves, this post was a timely reminder of why sometimes you've just got to take chance and trust your instincts for survival.
Hugh,
It's definitely that fear of not being about to see from point A to point Z that holds a lot of people back from getting started.

2 things when I work with clients or speak that I mention:

1) Your biggest success usually comes as a by-product of moving towards your original goal. But it only comes as you start moving forward. i.e. I have a friend who was looking for a way to bill his martial arts clients in '98 and ended up creating an entire invoicing and billing solution for a ton of other businesses.

2) Think of yourself in a really thick, pea soup fog. You can only see the next 100 feet in front of you - but as you move forward you'll see the next 100 yds. And then the next 100 yds, etc.

Happy New Year and keep up the good work.
