Jason and David,
I believe the clue is also authenticity. Yes, you need to be international . But there is always one's roots which define who we are. Applying that authenticity into our work is key.
See what the EU Commissioners do: they never state their home contry but always refer to "the country I know best"...I guess that is being international and local at the same time

Oh, I'll totally go wherever you want to send me for an opportunity to work with a team that values the two way conversation. Even better if you will let me investigate how the middle eastern/arab modes of storytelling can be better employed to foster ground-truth communication.

Jason,
That's fair enough if you see your career in domestic work only. But these days to do international work properly you must have lived and worked outside of your own country otherwise you are faking it.

I'm going to say that most people don't want to leave their home countries in the west for the Middle East and China is because of the human rights violations of those countries.
Personally, I wouldn't want to live in either place; no matter what the pay was. There is constant civil unrest, and you can be jailed at any time and held indefinitely. Wouldn't it be awesome to go fly to Qatar so that you could bail your regional ad PR guy out of prison because he was buying a coffee when a car bomb went off across the street and he looks different?

GREAT interview. I recently had a friend who stepped into the upper ranks of Weber Shandwick (never heard of them until he started working there). Being aware of who they are and what they do helped in giving me a greater appreciation for this conversation. Additionally I totally concur with David's response to #10. Have a voice. Contribute something. Be passionate. The traveling point is right on as well. I did the Peace Corps about 8 years back and have traveled the world. One of the best career moves in my life. Broadened my horizons (and ways of thinking) in ways I can't even begin to explain. I totally dig what David says about this. Thanks Hugh for doing this interview and thanks to David for agreeing to it. Cheers!

What a day for us All.
WHAT IS GOOD AND WHAT IS BAD APART FROM JUDGEMENT?
I`ve been reading Clyde A. Milner`s "Major Problems in the American West" again and again ,for two years, since I have been on the road as it were. All my books are on the other side of the planet. America you`ve come a long way...too far perhaps.
Frank Norris` "The Octopus" too.
That should be required reading or a part of law and consciousness for every American.
Books unfortunately are too heavy for light travel, so I read gaping void instead.
Well, today I think I really found out why.
I am only at point five (eight now) but already, I feel this post, and, I will use a word that gets bandied around, with little or no appreciation of what it actually, inherently means...
`what a piece of work`.......is mesmerising!
to wit:
awesome, incisive questions, to the point but light - not self absorbed; just fantastic answers, altogether blindingly adroit copy (the low brow word for WRITING b.t.w.) throughout...human, humble, informative, illuminating...&cetera
is there anything else we need in this world ?
NO. Power to the people & the salient themes of Barack Obama. Lets hope they are more than semantic lip service. Change, freedom, prosperity, belief, equality, value, tolerance....happiness - are we on the threshold? All hail new America?
There are also beautiful, timely messages of truth in here, indeed the world WAS blown up, we must now live in colour, broaden horizons, forget false certainties and brand/industry proselytising, etcetera..Exxon and the 'gang' - whoever, I hope YOU can change for the better?
(soon perhaps must)
Perhaps I`m proselytising myself, but find, `movements` online such as "the whole Web 2.o thang" are obviously more sociopolitical than they immediately appear.....surely I`m not alone? Or just late to the table...again.
Who am I to comment upon these matters suffice to say I`ve had a few wines to celebrate, hopefully not a pyrrhic victory, but a resounding hallelujah to the heavens, and I hope I don't regret my comments another day, but this must qualify as a fine, fine blog entry of the highest calibre, and, perhaps today, in the way aforementioned of the most immediate import.
Thanks to all.

Sure.
You and Greg Palast.
*shrug*
I never expected to be a star.
But what I learned 60s/70s is that there was a living to be made doing lights / sound / SM. (That's stage manager.)
The fact that I did SigInt / NORAD/SAC? No never mind.
You win in the personality game.
And you validate that game.
So *shrug* ... sorry dewd.
It's gonna hit you harder than it hits me.
And when it hits ...
... I'll just *shrug*.
I raised my 5 kids. (2nd oldest is MD, which is pretty kewl. Eldest is webmistress/report. Etc &tc &tc ... but I know, I know, with you and yours I'm a loser. And that's all that counts.)
So, know what? You and yours are gonna pull the rug out from under Obama's feet.
Dewd, not sayin' you ain't clehvur.
Saying you ain't got spine.
Is all.
*shrug*
from the trenches
as though you fucking care
--bentrem
p.s. CMC since '72 ... what fucking yuppie twit has the 7 seconds it takes to ponder what that means? pathological, iz whott.
