“social gestures beget social objects”


When I was last in San Fran­cisco a few weeks ago, my good friend, Shel Israel inter­vie­wed me, as part of his new FastCompany.com gig. We tal­ked about “Social Objects”, with a heavy empha­sis on “Social Mar­kers”. It was a fun time. Thanks for the oppor­tu­nity, Shel!

  1. I was just explai­ning what a Social Mar­ker was to someone I met at a Orlan­do­Co­de­Camp con­fe­rence last night. And how we both used them to esta­blish a solid base for a night full of conversation.

    Is it me, or is this whole move­ment the begin­ning of us humans star­ting to “get it”? I per­so­nally think
    web 2.0 = human dyna­mics 101
    What these tools do is ena­ble and empo­wer peo­ple and busi­nes­ses who are trans­pa­rent and, like Hugh says, “genuine”. This is put­ting our human core values at the core of what we do.

    Thanks for that. A really inte­res­ting — and very rich — terri­tory.
    Was thin­king about the brands that are ena­bling this kind of stuff to hap­pen.
    When you think about it, there are plenty of busi­nes­ses at least online that are ena­bling this sort of thing — Zopa, Tri­pAd­vi­sor, Ama­zon reviews, eBay, Book Mooch.
    These brands ena­ble con­su­mers to do something they couldn’t before: find out what hotels are REALLY like, buy and sell online, share books they no lon­ger want.
