Technically you're correct, of course, Peter.
I'm thinking more in terms of "Cultural Phenom" than the individual media per se.

Your line is not strictly accurate, Hugh. It IS a novel, and now it's ALSO a film!

Nice movie---went to see it in Berlin the other day, unfortunately dubbed into German (prefer original voices) though that might be a good sign the movie is on its way to success.
I guess the only connection between geek dinners and the Microsoft monster and Hallam Foe's woes is---you, or more generally, "blogging". But I also guess that's alright. Been there, watched the movie, otherwise busy with my own stuff. So are you and everyone else. Fair enough! The "conversation", "etc". Er, off to more work.

I think the comparison is justified, although I kinda prefer "Scotland's Holden Caulfield is Hallam Foe"

Hugh
It sure beats hearing people saying "Scotland's always cold and raining" on the cheapie flight back home.
Cracking strapline though.

Dennis, it works for me. If it doesn't for you, no big deal.
But granted, we'll see if it still works for me in a month ;-)
Russ, The Robert Burns poem is mentioned/referenced in the book.

Damn if that doesn't tell me exactly what the film is like -- and it tells me I must see this film when it reaches the U.S.'s midwest.
Hugh, you're even better than the Ad Men on AMC's MAD Men series. :->

It came at the right time - Catcher In the Rye has far more resonance in the States than anywhere else.

I'm looking forward to seeing Hallam Foe. Although, I wonder if you noticed the irony as Catcher in The Rye was a malapropism whereby Holden had misheard Robert Burns' "Coming Through the Rye", thus making Coming Through the Rye the original Catcher in the Rye.
Is my thinking too geeky?

Oh come on Hugh - that's stretching credulity a little far don't you think? Unless of course you can punt that line with success to the Guardian. If you do - I'll be buying you wine. Seriously.
