Damien Mulley talks about owning a set of gapingvoid Blogcards.
The reaction has been interesting, some people laugh out loud and pocket the card. Some laugh out loud, pocket the card and then you can see them saying “What a fucking wanker” to themselves. The 3rd kind look at the card and tell me it is not funny and business people should take business seriously yadda yadda yadda. The 4th kind laugh at the card and then tell me I’m an asshole. I can work with these people the best.

That’s the cartoon I have on my cards and I love the reactions to it. People certainly remember it. Many times, when I meet someone else in the company they tell me they heard about it.
it starts the conversation at a different level, and seems to let people know I may be slightly dangerous, which is true. :>)
I was surprised by this phenomenon for the first year that I started using gapingvoid cards! I found that some found me more intriguing, some didn’t get it, and some were slightly turned off.
It wasn’t for some time that I realized that I could use this to my advantage: those that appreciated the card were sure the ones that were sure to be the best use of my time!
Being totally fucking amazing is Job One…incorporated into that would be “change the world or go home”, wouldn’t it?!… Why bother otherwise… :0)
Hi Hugh — I didn’t know that you “license” (if that’s the right word) your work for use in business cards. How do I do that? I am sure my company wouldn’t allow me — they’re too jurassic and all — but heck, I can always have my own set of cards that’s all about me and what I “bring to the table”. This rocks! (BTW, I hope you don’t mind: I printed out a copy of your “Only talented people fret about mediocrity” work and I have it now right in-front of me inside my cubicle. Everyone who’s seen it smiled quietly; some smirked, but I guess they just don’t get it… Not a lot of people… Sadly.)
Well I ordered the blue monster ones on Friday, with the same info on the reverse that I have on my Microsoft business card.
Microsoft doesn’t have a policy on this that I know of, but having “fucking” or “shitstirer” on my card as Damien does would probably not go over well.
I could cheerfully have, “Your Whatsit, our thingamy” / “Tiny ship of order / vast sea of chaos” “This is a business, not a a science project”, and may yet get “Businesses are not run by IT departments”
There are a lot more I could send my friends on greeting cards but couldn’t hand over in a business situation.
That’s the card that I chose for myself as a blogcard.. In fact, I have twice run the same order.
I don’t use it as a business card, rather more of a personal card. What stand at mostly is that when given to a business person, they kinda look at your strangely. Some even comment that “whoa thats kinda wacky”- When I was in India, I was asked, in America /Canada do they give our cards with the F word in it ?? He found it totally ludicrous. However, at times I got the best feedback, long after– How could I not remember you, you made such a bold statement with you card.
I think eventually, thats what its all about. Having a card is not the issue, using it to make a bold statement is what it’s about !! If you believe in one of the card, then you just order it and use it. That becomes statement that we live by !!

I respect you for having the (ya-knows) to actually say things others are too “sheepish” to articulate, whether on a business card or in your blog.

Ordered my set of cards today with the Blue Monster after receiving a signed lithograph, albeit a tad mangled by the postal service. Not sure if you or Steve sent it (I assume Steve), but it will be gracing my business wall soon enough for all to see to spread the virus.
