“we are t.v.”

Great speech from Jeff Jar­vis. Here’s the video. Here are the notes.

But we’ve just begun. In the evo­lu­tion of the new TV, this is 1954: Arthur God­frey and Friends, My Little Mar­gie, the Adven­tu­res or Rin­Tin­Tin. That was not the gol­den age of TV. TV then suc­ked. But it got bet­ter. So will ours.
And this means we have a great oppor­tu­nity to rein­vent TV from scratch in an enti­rely new medium with a new rela­tionship with our public, new crea­tive stan­dards, new means of pro­duc­tion and dis­tri­bu­tion, new eco­no­mic models. We can nur­ture an explo­sion of crea­ti­vity and com­merce. But we have to do it right.

    Back then, there was limi­ted choice of alter­na­tive enter­tain­ment so the audience was pre­pa­red to put up with crap. Today that is patently not true and the dis­re­gard for edi­ting etc in most video and pod­casts is astoun­ding. The win­dow of oppor­tu­nity is going to be much, much sma­ller than it was for television.

    I, too, am astoun­ded by the lack of regard for the vie­wer or lis­te­ner in so much of video or pod­casts.
    Don’t make me wait for the mes­sage, and show some res­pect for the fact that your audience’s time has value.

    TV back then did not ‘suck’, sim­ple enter­tain­ment that made you smile and feel invi­go­ra­ted was all that peo­ple nee­ded for a plea­sant eve­ning at home.
    Today, there is so much inten­tio­nal exci­te­ment, one has to feel shell shoc­ked to be memo­rably entertained
