commissioning gapingvoid cartoons

trati002jpeg.jpg
[A lithograph idea I currently have for Technorati.]
Over the last year, I’ve received DOZENS of commission requests to design people’s logos, business cards, illustrate their books etc etc. All of which I’ve pretty much turned down.
The main reasons for dragging my feet: I was busy. I wasn’t sure how much to charge. Should I charge a lot? A little? I could see it overwhelming me completely, at the expense of my other work. I never had any intention of becoming a professional illustrator. The business model does little for me.
Oh well, that is in the past. I am happy to announce I have talked to the folk at Stormhoek and we’ve come up with a solution.
If you fancy commissioning a gapingvoid drawing for your own use, I have developed a new business model that [A] works for me, [B] works for Stormhoek and [C] doesn’t cost you an arm and a leg.
Please e-mail me if you wish to know more. Thanks.

I’d much rather have that technorati logo on my sidebar. Does this mean such logos would be released under a similar Creative Commons license?

    yeah,
I’d watch out that you don’t commodify your look. part of the beauty of the Blue Monster is that it isn’t a commodity, it isn’t a commercial product, &c.
I think that anyone would say that the draw (no pun intended) of your work is that it is really and truly inspired. the technorati lithograph is, well, less inspired.
now there’s always the storhoek argument but it’s so clear that it’s a product about which you are really excited and the drawings aren’t exactly “wine” drawings so much as “love” drawings.
in my opinion your drawings are also more than just a style, they represent a frame of mind about art on the internet (art for the people &c.) that is at least progressive if not somewhat revolutionary (a revolution in which you are taking part, of course). if I were you I would be loathe to lose that edginess.
this is not to say I think I’m making any brilliant new statements. just a concerned reader’s opinion.
basically i’m trying to say that i think that commodities just aren’t viral. the two are sort of mutually exclusive.
also, is the agreement that the lithographs/logos have stormhoek.com on them? that could be pretty lame…
    best

  3. I’ll be in the queue in Altrincham for a portrait Hugh!!

  4. Stilgherrian says:

Hugh, by all means do the occasional piece of corporate work like this – and charge through the nose for it!
I wish I could remember the reference, but I’m reminded of the story of a New York-based guy (performer? comedian?) who was asked to do a motivation session for a corporate client. He didn’t want to do it — so he told ’em it’d cost $15k.
Their response? “Wow, this guy must be really good!” And he got the gig.
