George Lucas doesn't even make movies anymore - and rarely did - but has built a successful company, albeit one that seems to primarily make video games and license toys. Coppola's ambitions spread beyond movies to TV, theater, radio, publishing and he never made it to the '80s for exactly the reasons you mentioned. Coppola's dream still impresses me far more than Lucas' success. This brings to mind the difference between Lucasfilm and the failure of Francis Coppola’s Zoetrope Studios.
