The mother of a friend of mine (actually, the daughter is friend of a friend, but I heard this from the daughter) works as the hostess for a high-end restaurant in downtown Portland. This woman makes a good salary, has benefits & she never has to work holidays -- a rarity for the restaurant industry. (For the non-US folk, the job consists of taking reservations & showing people to their tables.) Every time a new manager tries to reduce costs by letting this woman go, he ends up hiring her back on terms more favorable to her. Why? She's successfully schmoozed with the local rich & powerful, who eat there on a frequent basis. And when they find out that she's been let go (again), they complain.
