  1. What’s an A-lister? Try the bloody OPML lis­tings doing the rounds. It’s just what we need, another list where, if traf­fic is money, the rich are get­ting richer and the poor just type and watch.
    Maybe I am mis­sing the point about sha­red OPML, but what bene­fit does another list bring other than to make the most famous, more famous?
    Anyone, PLEASE shed some light on this!

    Paul I was telling someone this just yes­ter­day, but what I do from time to time is use Tech­no­rati to sort the mar­ke­ting blogs, and start rea­ding them FROM THE BOTTOM. You would be ama­zed at how many inc­re­dibly smart blog­gers are out there that you have never heard of, simply because they don’t play the net­wor­king game of going to all the con­fe­ren­ces. I’ve found about 10 of my favo­rite blogs this way, all have less than 20 links, and I would have likely never found any of them if I had relied on the ‘A-Lister’ blo­grolls to tell me who I should be reading.

    (I just read an entry in Desert­Light jour­nal [http://desertlightjournal.blog-city.com/whats_next__aid_to_dependent_bloggers_an_open_letter_to_doc_.htm ] tal­king about being so far out on the long tail as to be somewhere past Z into the greek let­ters, and in the same entry tal­king about get­ting 500 hits/day and get­ting seve­ral spea­king invi­ta­tions as a result of the blog. If that’s out beyond Z, where does that put me, I ask you?)
    Mack, I have to say I like your plan, and not just because it means peo­ple who follow it more are likely to find my blog. :) There are, indeed, a tre­men­dous num­ber of inte­lli­gent blog­gers out there in the long tail.

    You foo­ling around with the title of your feed really threw me for a bit. Total Qua­lity Gaping­Void? The funny thing is that in 10 – 20 years a lot of the best stuff writ­ten here will be co-opted by aca­de­mia, dilu­ted and taught to mar­ke­ting stu­dents, and this may actually become a ‘pro­per’ term. Heh.

  9. I did won­der about the title Hugh. Another typi­cally subtle piece of humour! Nice one! I actually thought it was a cle­ver piece of SEO, but then I noti­ced today’s hea­der too!
    Methinks there is an awful lot of poten­tial in Priate Eye-style “solutions-watch” or Colemanballs!

  10. Hey Mack, I also got into a con­ver­sa­tion abotu this yes­ter­day and conc­lu­ded that often the best opi­nions and most insight­ful views come from the com­ments that follow a pos­ting.
    Michael Arring­ton on Techc­runch must receive around 40 com­ments per pos­ting and there are often some very, very good com­ments in there spot­ting things that Michael him­self does not.
    The pro­blem though is con­sis­tency. One good com­ment does not a good blog make unfortunately.

    Bingo! This is spe­ci­fi­cally why I don’t use Blo­gli­nes, I want to visit each blog and READ the com­ments. Usually, as you say, there’s nug­gets of wis­dom buried in the com­ments that you’ll miss if you don’t look for them.
