I understand the 20-something movie thing, but PLEASE someone explain this-
who's fantasy is represented by the 'fat-guy/skinny-wife' sitcoms that run on the big 3 networks?
I've only ever seen the trailers for these shows, but there is no way in hell that george lopez, the fat ass UPS driver from queens, jim belushi and george costanza would ever score wives like that.
just once i want to hear the guy say "honey, you're such a hottie, I'm glad you settled for the fat sensitive alcoholic with the 35K a year job in the suburbs"
oh geez, i just answered my own question didn't I.....

"The sad thing is that most of us have had boyfriends like this in the past, and we continue to be encouraged to do so by films like these, which teach us that if we are just patient and loving enough, the guy will come around."
I didn't see the movie. Art (term used loosely) imitating life? Life imitating art? Many stereotypes exsist because there is often a grain of truth in them. I know too many women who will take the loser/abuser/jerk over the decent guy everytime. Repeatedly. Excited by the badboy/toughguy/self-absorbed image, they fail time and time again to see that often, what you see is what you get. Who in their right mind would follow advice or encouragement doled out by the latest movie, magazine, pop song, etc? Sadly, the majority of the populace of this country. It would be a crime if anyone actually thought for himself, took action, and then accepted responsibility for that action.

What a coincidence. I wrote about this exact same thing, inspired as you were by Cynthia, just yesterday:
<a href="http://esotericrabbit.blogspot.com/2005_04_01_esotericrabbit_archive.html#111482038270557505" rel="nofollow">http://esotericrabbit.blogspot.com/2005_04_01_esotericrabbit_archive.html#111482038270557505</a>
I love your site, by the way, Hugh.

Hm, fortunately I've never seen a movie that's a poor twentysomething-male's fantasy, so I can't complain I guess.
I agree with Cynthia, though, that girls should just not bother to hang out with totally care-about-nothing pricks. Pretty girls still like to hang out with jerks, though (jerks is not = losers), mostly becaues these jerks are good at telling these girls how cool and cute they are (and it's the truth), and becaues the jerks may not have much brain and aren't creative, but they have a mighty brawn usually.
The brawn is stronger than the brain, who would've thought it? Must have been a brain-person.
