t-shirt tally, day one

In its first 24 hours, gapingvoid sold 100 t-shirts plus 8 subscriptions. Not bad at all, considering the site is only in pre-order mode.
No, I don’t expect this pace to continue. If it drops off 50% in the next 24 hours it won’t surprise me. However, I also suspect subscriptions will start trickling in quite steadily once people have started receiving the shirts and talking about them; once people know they aren’t duds etc.
A hundred t-shirts on the first day. That seems like a lot to me.

Google did it better in pre-order mode ;)
It is a lot indeed, but I expected it to go a lot faster. Maybe it’s an idea to partner with local (read: Dutch!) t-shirt printers, so the distribution will be a lot easier?

Funny, I was thinking it would go a lot slower… at least until the proper site was up n’ running.

Good job! Great first day for a great shirt.

I know that this is limited edition, etc., but would you consider printing some t-shirts other than white?
I basically don’t ever wear white shirts. It’s a personal issue, but after about one or two wearings on a white shirt the armpits start to yellow for me. While I don’t know that they know exactly why this happens for some people — but in the research I have done it seems to be a reaction with the aluminum in deodorants that happens in some segment of the population. I have tried aluminum-free deodorant but was not happy with its performance (still noticeable BO). Hence, I don’t wear white shirts. I have a couple of white dress shirts to wear under suits when necessary (but I don’t take off my coat).

    Typo:
Black silk-screen print on centred on front chest
    Unless this is some Brit-speak that I don’t get…

Maybe a little neutral greyish / beige is something to try?
Technically it’s no problem of course to let everyone choose their color as long as the print (colour) is the same.

I’d be curious to know approximately what percentage of your readership 100 shirts represents.

  8. Ok, we’ve talked about the price. Much more important (at that price) is what I would get though. I also don’t like white shirts (looks too doctor-like), and would prefer a black (or even better: gray) one.
I’d also like to know how the sizes are. Sometimes I’m using M, sometimes L (but often these are way too wide). I’m somewhat skinny, so I’d like a more narrow shirt. I can’t really relate to the numbers. What does 39/40″ mean?

  9. Ben says:

Congratulations. A good shirt is hard to find.

  10. Samuel says:

Will we know when the new ones are available, or would we have to check the t-shirt website?
btw, its been a long time since I’ve seen a date written in the dd/mm/yy format. Reminds me of India :-)

  11. hugh macleod says:

Samue, actually, that’s a really good idea. Thanks. I suppose the thing to do would be to have an e-mail update newsletter…

  12. Indigo says:

    Anon — Typo fixed.
Samuel — amused that British date format reminds you of India. Email update is a great idea. Will talk to Hugh and we’ll get something going ASAP.

Congrats on the sales, Hugh. Excellent.
As far as the tee shirt updates go, wouldn’t RSS be better than email for a lot of your readers? I certainly prefer to get my news & updates via RSS, and I would guess that this is common among your with-it audience.
That must be why you discontinued the gapingvoid newsletter, yes? Or was that just a matter of finding time to deal with it?

  14. Jill says:

    That’s great!

  15. hugh macleod says:

RSS is a good idea, John…

  16. Jon Husband says:

What about bespoke t-shirts .. to go along with your bespoke biz cards ?

  17. Jon Husband says:

… or even a bespoke limited edition series .. i can think of 4 — 6 different slogans or epithets I would like.
You could offer said service to bloggers the world over, providing them (for example) with an annual limited series of t-shirts in keepoing with where and what their blog or blogs focus on at present, or for the next year … etc.
Somewhat higher price, of course. There’s a little Vancouver company here(started about two years ago) that makes semi-custom t-shirts that evidently are big in LA / Hollywood .. if I remember correctly the price is around US $150, and supposedly they can’t keep up with demand … I’m not sure of the co’s name, but I think it’s Dirty Shirts or something like that.

  18. Jon Husband says:

From up-thread … “Samue, actually, that’s a really good idea. Thanks. I suppose the thing to do would be to have an e-mail update newsletter…”
why not just an RSS feed that interested people can subscribe to, that distributes all new t-shirt info as soon as you post it to indigo ?
