Oh, this is WAY too funny.
I’ve started recieving comment spam by none other than… wait for it… Blogethics.org.
Heh. That Jason Calacanis, he’s such a rube.
Go here to see some.

[LINKLUBE:] The newest Advertising-related blog to watch: AdPulp. David Byrne’s a fine writer with some good ideas. Check it out!
[UPDATE:] I just got an e-mail from Jason– I honestly don’t think it was him, but somebody trying to make him look bad. Really, nobody who does blogs that seriously would be that stupid.
Any guesses? The IP number is 68.120.181.17 if that helps.

    Hugh,
I rip on your “Hughtrain Manifesto” and you still think I’m a good read. Nice. The high road is the road less taken, but the one worth taking, for sure. Thank you for your patience and your plug.
Btw, I spell it “Burn.” David Byrne is the guy with big suits. I’m sure you suffer the same fate with the Mc v. Mac thing.

    Hugh,
I’m sorry you got spammed. It was NOT me… someone is doing this to try and make me look bad.
I’m sorry you have to deal with this, but these Word of Mouth/BzzAgent folks seem to be willing to do anything to take down anyone who takes them on.
    Idiots.

  4. Dave Balter says:

    Jason -
You know very well this isn’t us.
We even talked to you today as we BOTH tried to figure out who was doing this.
If it was us, why would we call our own businesses “evil”?
I’m all about engaging in the debate, but your tactics are clearly disingenuous. Spreading untrue statement without facts, in writing, is libel. Be careful.

  5. Jason, you’re about the best person at accusatory generalizations that I’ve ever seen/read online. Why assume it’s a WoM/BzzAgent rather than someone else you’ve pissed-off in the last two days?
Don’t you think it’s a little obvious for WoM crew to actually use THAT topic to embarrass you? Especially from an organization that you accuse of being secretive? Sheesh! you’d think we were Freemasons or something.
Hmmm… FREEMASON has nine letters, and so does BZZAGENTS — they must be witches — Burn ‘em!!
WAIT… CALACANIS also has nine letters.
    It’s all a conspiracy.
…besides, the mind control instructions from “The Hive” said to use your Sony Boycott as the subject of our “Calacanis Comment Spam Campaign.” Two more BzzPoints and I get a toaster.

BzzAgent turned me into a NEWT…
    but I got better.

  6. Jason says:

I don’t know it was BzzAgents… you’re right. That is why I put a ? at the end of my statement on my blog. However, it is clear that a large group of your agents are very mad at me for pointing out the fact that you guys are telling them to lie and be decieve people.
I’m getting a lot of your BzzAgents posting insane spam on my blog… very hateful stuff.
My *guess* at this point is that one of your agents is so upset about me calling you guys out for promoting lying and deception – as the New York Times did yesterday – that they are willing to do anything to make me look bad. Again, it is my guess that this is one of your agents, but I don’t know that for sure. However, I may know who did this very shortly… and that will be a very interesting moment won’t it?
    best jason

  7. Jason:
The NY Times article did nothing even remotely close to saying BzzAgent lied or deceived. As a matter of fact they cited a specific instance in which an applicant elected NOT to join because they felt they couldn’t live up to the ethical standards by which BzzAgents are asked to abide.
It appears your reading comprehension is as poor as your comprehension of the role of BzzAgent.com and its agents.
I’m guessing you’re receiving angry comments simply because your approach to criticizing the company’s business ideas comes closer to personally insulting the BzzAgents by accusing them of being disingenuous and calling them liars and deceivers.
Nobody likes a personal attack, Jason… especially when your basis for the claim is nothing so much as your opinion, rather than fact or experience.
Although an argument can be made that since BzzAgent does not manufacture or control the buzz their agents relate, that there could be ‘bad apples’ amongst the bunch — but it’s impossible to control an individual’s actions, and the same ‘bad apple’ argument can be made for any group of people — doctors, lawyers, waiters, and… bloggers.

This BzzzAgents thing… am I missing something subtle and nuanced or is it just products that aren’t good enough to get word of mouth bribing people to give them fake word of mouth?
Surely no one would be stupid enough to think that’s a new and radical marketing concept (nevermind a *good* one)…
