    no, it’s cruel. The smi­ley is happy _because_ the frow­ney is sad, isn’t it?
    (did I just invent the word frowney?)

    i don’t think there’s cau­sa­lity there but it’s ado­ra­ble to me. a sad face is as ado­ra­ble as a frow­ning one. sad and ado­ra­ble are not mutually exclusive.

    i inter­pre­ted it as the smi­ley appears to be happy, but he’s really mise­ra­ble inside. Perhaps a bit of self-projection?

    there’s more than one way to inter­pret the car­toon, ya know…
